Its been more than a decade since India participated in Olympics. Norman Prichard was the lone athlete at 1900 Paris Olympics. The first ever team was sent at 1920 with two wrestlers and two athletes. Since then India has participated in almost all summer Olympics.
Norman Prichard started India's quest for medals since 1900 only. The lone athlete bagged two silver medals. The first ever gold came in 1928 Amsterdam Olympics and it was none other than Indian Field hockey team led by Major Dhyan Chand. Since then almost each year till 1980 Indian hockey provided us one gold or silver. The whole world acclaimed our hockey playing skills. Major Dhyam chand was thought to have magnetic stick.
But in late 1980's Indian hockey started facing problems and the worst performance came in 2012 London Olympics . Being a national game of India and having been world champions for almost 60 years, Indian hockey could not even manage to win a single game. It not only exposed the inherent misery of Indian hockey but also made the world realize that gone are the days of Indian hockey.
Blame game has started since then as expected from we Indians. Indian Olympic officials are criticizing the players and players blaming the selectors. Poor coach Michael Nobbs has become a culprit. But whatz can a coach do, its the team which makes a good coach and not vice-versa.
The worst scenario has also erupted owing to the poor management from govt side. There are two hockey associations working namely, Indian Hockey federation (IHF) and hockey India. both are making no stones unturned to worsen the misery of Indian hockey. These officials were enjoying in London when Indian hockey was facing its worst days.Lack of coordination between these associations and inadequate support base from ministry are the major reasons for hockey misery.
Its the time of the hour that Ajay Maken, our honorable sports minister should look into the matter seriously. Also the players should be motivated for giving their best performances. Not only this, the state sports ministry should support their state players and the association of all is utmost required to save some remains of indian hockey.
